Debra Messing Talks Son, Singing & Smash
File under Interview, Smash posted on 16 February, 2012 by

She won our hearts when she played quirky and neurotic interior decorator Grace Adler on Will & Grace but has definitely upped her ante in NBC’s new musical drama Smash, a show that revolves around a group of characters who come together to put on a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Debra recently opened up about her son Roman and on her desire to sing on the show.

Debra – who plays songwriter/lyricist Julia Houston on the show – admits that although her 7-year-old son is demonstrating some acting talent, she doesn’t exactly want him to follow in her footsteps.

“He was Peter Pan last week at school,” the Lucky You actress tells . “It was terrifying for me. And he was brilliant.”

“I told him when he was about two weeks old that I’d already decided that he was going to be an architect,” she adds. “But that’s fine for now… it’s a hobby, but it’s not what Mama chose for him though.”

As far as her love of singing, Debra says she wouldn’t mind belting out a few more tunes on the set of Smash.

“I’ve already shot a song,” the star reveals. “All I can say is I play the lyricist, so the context and the tone of the singing is very different but they have incorporated song into the very dramatic arc of my character in a way that I think is pretty clever.”

“I would love [to continue singing on the show],” she adds. “Are you kidding? The more the merrier.”

Smash’s Debra Messing: Which Audition Terrified Her the Most?
File under Interview, Media, News & Rumours posted on 16 February, 2012 by

Even stars get nervous during job interviews.

In this case, the job interview is an audition. The star in question? Debra Messing, currently jazzing up prime time in the smash making-of-a-Broadway-musical series Smash.

We quizzed the hot-pink-clad actress, who swung by Michael Kors’ Fashion Week show this morning, about her own experience hitting the audition circuit when she was just getting started.

One particular audition, she says, still stands out as the most memorable and terrifying acting bid she’s ever had to do. Clue? It wasn’t for a Tinseltown project…

“I remember vividly in high school having to audition for Annie,” she tells us, “and having to go in front of my drama teacher and in front of all the other kids in the drama club, and having to sing ‘Tomorrow.’”

Talk about perfect casting! We can totally picture the flame-haired funnylady in her younger days gunning for the iconic role of the spunky, redheaded orphan.

“I wanted Annie so badly, and I ended up getting the part!” she says. “But I remember feeling that very unique terror, exuberance, excitement, trepidation that only comes from auditioning for something—and something that you really love.”

So does she still get butterflies in her stomach these days when coming in to audition?

“Always, always!” she admits.

We’d tell Messing to break a leg, but we’re sure the talented and versatile gal kills it at any audition she does!

Debra Messing explains her return to television
File under Interview, Media, Smash posted on 14 February, 2012 by

Saying goodbye to “Will and Grace” after eight seasons was tough for Debra Messing.

“That last night was brutal. It was like 7-year-olds crying,” she said after the show’s series finale.

Just as tough as ending was deciding to start on another series.

“I’m a mom and it has to be really, really special for me to commit to something,” Messing says now.

“Smash” turned out to be that really special something.

“I called my agents, and I said, ‘I have to be a part of this,’ and they said, ‘Who is this?’ because that’s not in my personality,” she laughs.

It wasn’t simply her own role of Julia, a successful Broadway songwriter, but the array of other talents involved with this insider’s look at the making of a musical.

“It’s insanity. From the creative team to the cast, everywhere you turn there’s another person who’s expert at what they do,” Messing says.

That includes real-life Broadway veteran Christian Borle, who plays Messing’s longtime song-writing partner.

Messing says she’s enjoyed shooting scenes for “Smash” all around New York.

Debra Messing: ‘Will & Grace’s Eric McCormack could be my roommate’
File under Interview, News & Rumours, Will & Grace posted on 11 February, 2012 by

Debra Messing has joked that her former Will & Grace co-star Eric McCormack could soon be her roommate.

Messing – who is currently starring in Smash – told TV Guide that she’s offered her apartment to McCormack when he moves to New York City in the coming months.

“Eric’s moving to New York this spring to do a Broadway play [The Best Man], so I’ve told him he can have my guest room and we could live together again,” the actress revealed.

McCormack and Messing co-starred as best friends on Will & Grace for eight seasons between 1998 and 2006.

Messing has recently been rumoured to be dating her Smash co-star Will Chase. Smash director Michael Mayer appeared to confirm the romance by saying: “On Broadway, we call it a ‘showmance’. That’s where people meet and fall in love.”

Smash airs Mondays at 10/9c on NBC.

Debra’s Son Loves Peter Pan
File under Interview posted on 10 February, 2012 by

DEBRA Messing thinks her son is lost to Neverland — just as she was as a child.

The Smash actress says she had aspirations for her seven-year-old son Roman to get a “proper job” when he grows up but instead he looks to be following his mother’s Peter Pan path to stardom

“He was just Peter Pan in second grade in school,” says Debra.

“That was pretty meaningful for me because I was Wendy when I was small. I hoped he would be something like an architect and then I see him on stage singing away and he was so great. It was adorable.

“I think he wants to be an actor. I hope it is a phase but he is really good!”
